Power Strips Are Good Things

Quite a lot more of my stuff got moved today with the help of my parents and a few good friends. Pizza was enjoyed by all afterwards.

Amongst all this stuff were a couple of power strips, one for my desktop computer and various accessories, and another for the TV in my bedroom. I can now plug in the TV, the cable box, my iPhone dock, and a lamp all in the same outlet. I don’t really have a shortage of outlets, but few of the seem to be in convenient locations.

Tomorrow I’m going to see about procuring another category of important items, light bulbs. I’m not sure of the exact count, but I’ve had at least four or five bulbs burn out in the one week I’ve been here.

So Tired

I think this past week of just doing so much has worn me out. I’m almost looking forward to getting back to work Monday because it’s more relaxing than sorting out my kitchen and painting.

Today Mom and I got the two largest walls in the living room painted, and will probably do the other two plus touch-ups on Sunday. I’m not sure when we’ll get to the kitchen — maybe next weekend? I love how the color is bringing some life to the place from the ivory/cream/light beige that was everywhere, so I think I’ll have to figure out colors for the rest of place sooner than later.

Of all the absurd things I’m having trouble placing, it’s the TV in my bedroom. I bought it a few years ago when my ancient 13″ looked to be on its last legs, and while flat panels were out, they were a bit out of my price range, so this is a flat tube. Fabulous widescreen, and I think it’s only about a 20″, but it’s still a pretty big TV to find a place for. My bedroom here is actually smaller than what I had at my parents’ house, and I’m trying to keep the furniture to a minimum, but where to put the big TV? Mom and I are currently thinking about me giving her this TV and we’ll work something out so I can buy a 19″ or so flat panel. I don’t watch a lot of TV in my bedroom, but I do like to watch the occasional movie there, especially when I’m sick.

This evening the parents and I went out to eat and to run a couple of errands. I needed a new dryer vent because the one that’s here is too short — the old dryer was the top half of a stacking washer/dryer. I also bought some new pillows and a phone. I can’t imagine I’ll use my landline much, but I figured I should at least get one phone.

Tomorrow morning I’m heading over to my parents’ to do the laundry I still have over there and pack up as much as I can before 2:00, when I’m hoping a few friends will turn up to help me get all that stuff here. At this point there’s nothing I couldn’t do mostly myself or with just my mom’s help, but just to have extra help to carry the boxes and things up the stairs will be a godsend. And with any luck, I’ll find my router. As much as I love just having high-speed Internet again at all, I really miss being able to use my laptop in the living room.

The Productivity of Others

I don’t feel like I personally got much accomplished today, but quite a bit actually got done.

I got up plenty early and got a couple of things done, like finishing setting up my desktop computer so it’d be ready for high-speed Internet installation, but I was so tired I decided to take a short nap. Which wasn’t as short as I intended. But I was back up and showered and ready for someone from Comcast to show up between noon and 2:00 PM. I think he arrived about 12:30, and I’m pretty sure he had no idea how much work was going to be involved. Not only did I want the cable in the living room in a different place, but the two bedrooms weren’t wired at all. It turns out the living room might as well not have been either, as I learned later that there hasn’t been cable here for 12 years. I suspected the previous owner hadn’t had it because she had a converter box, and she had been here for 10 years, but I wasn’t sure if she had ever had it. A second guy arrived to help, and they were apparently supposed to be at another job by 4:00, probably in the 2-4 slot. They might have gotten there in time, but barely. As it is, there’s an issue with the Encore channels, so someone will be back out tomorrow sometime (that was certainly not something urgent enough for me to keep them, and I’ll be here all day except for possibly a little shopping trip).

Yeah, I think Mom and I both keep forgetting that my middle nephew’s birthday is Sunday. I know what I’m giving him, at least in part, but I haven’t actually purchased it yet. And I got Comcast’s Digital Voice service, so I suppose I should buy phones (one with two satellites is what I’m thinking) so someone could actually call me (pretty much everyone has my mobile number anyway, so it’s not like it’s a big deal). And the dryer hose isn’t long enough to reach my dryer (there was a stacking unit that the previous owner only used for the dryer, and it wasn’t all that great, as I learned the other night; fortunately I own my own set, though the washer here is better than mine), so I need to get a longer one very soon.

In the evening, a coworker of my dad’s and the coworker’s son were kind enough to help me with particularly difficult pieces of furniture, so I now have a loveseat (or couch, as my mom insists on calling it — it only has two cushions and isn’t long enough for me to stretch out completely on, so I think it’s a loveseat) to sit on, so I can watch TV in comfort. It’s nothing like the sofas with recliners I should get within the next 2-3 weeks, but it’ll do for now.

All in all, I’m feeling a little more civilized with the cable TV, high-speed Internet, and a loveseat, so it’s feeling like it’s starting to come together.

The Cats Are Here

Today started brightish and early, as deliverymen from HOM Furniture arrived pretty much at 7:30 AM to deliver my bed and TV console. I was opening the blinds in the living room and admiring the little wetlands area when I realized a HOM truck was driving toward my place. I had to scurry a little to clear a few things from the walkway. Those guys are super efficient. They brought up three whole pieces of furniture plus my bed in three sections, put together the bed, and were on there way to their next destination in about 15 minutes.

Next up was Slumberland with a new mattress set. I really can’t wait to finish up this post and get some quality shuteye.

About three hours later Best Buy arrived with my new HDTV. Tomorrow I’ll have my TiVo (it still had stuff to record via my parents’ cable tonight so my mom’s bringing it with her tomorrow morning) and cable, not to mention high-speed Internet and a couch to sit on. I’ve tried to keep up with Facebook, but I haven’t been able to deal with all of the games I enjoy or anything. And I haven’t even seen the Mad Men season finale yet!

By early afternoon, Mom and I were pretty much done touching up the paint in my bedroom and were thinking about heading to their house to get my Lane cedar chest (it was my paternal grandmother’s, which I inherited; I never knew her, so even though it’s not in great shape on the outside due to being stored in a porch where it was exposed to too many elements for too long, I love it, and it’s perfect on the inside) ready for the help my dad found me for some of my heavier and bulkier furniture, plus pack up my desktop computer and its cart so it’s ready for the Internet installation. Except right about then a coworker called who had offered me a set of two bookcases they no longer need, and she and her husband could bring them over then. Amazingly, they also pretty much got them up the stairs themselves too and brought them back to the second bedroom. I totally owe them cookies or something.

After that was done, Mom and I eventually did get back to their house to do what we needed there and eat supper. Then to the main event, herding the cats and getting them here.

Sadly, I could only find one of their carriers (I”m sure the second is somewhere obvious, but I haven’t had to take more than one of them to the vet for quite a while, so I’ve only needed the one available), so as they wandered by I crammed them in the one. They technically both fit, and can even both lay down, but that doesn’t mean they enjoyed it. My parents and I loaded up Mom’s and my car, then I got the cats, and I had an awful car ride with the cats whining/crying/whatever the whole time, but thankfully it’s a short drive.

At first I let the cats loose in my bedroom while Mom and I unloaded our cars, but they were itching to be let loose, so as soon as the door to the garage was shut, I opened the door to see what would happen.

Generally, I’d say they did fine. They did lots of exploring and sniffing, and except for Blazer begging me to play (this is totally normal constant behavior with a particular favorite toy) and Guinness being a little clingy (also normal when he’s a little stressed), they’ve just gone about their business. Of course Blazer’s business is seeing what boxes she can dig into, but so be it. Whatever she gets into, I’m just happy to have them here now.

Early to Bed, Early to Rise

It’ll be a very quick note tonight. It was a long day of painting and moving a few things from my parents’ house, and I have to be ready by 7:30 tomorrow morning for the first of three deliveries.

7:30-10:30: bed and TV stand (and if I’m lucky, they’ll be willing to help with the coffe table and end table I stupidly picked up last night and only managed to get as far as my garage)
8:30-10:30: mattress set
11-1: TV

I am so looking forward to having my new mattress! And not only because my cats can finally move to their new home tomorrow evening since I won’t be sleeping on an air mattress anymore.

I’m looking forward to the new HDTV too, but it’ll be better after Comcast is here Thursday, and great when I actually have time to watch TV again.

I needed a little comfort knitting, so I’m doing a couple rows of my bath mat and then I’ll get to bed. *yawn*

Prepping to Paint

It figures that I had just shut down my netbook when I realized I hadn’t posted yet today. Thank goodness for the WordPress iPhone app! This is going to be short and sweet because I still need to sand and maybe tape for painting tomorrow.

At the end of this post I’m including a couple of iPhone photos of what Mom and I have to deal with to paint my master bedroom. This room is on a bit of a tighter schedule than the rest because my mattress set is being delivered Wednesday, and we’d rather not work around it. Also, I really want to move my cats, so I want one room that’s mostly done I can close them in when necessary. Not that I’ve figured out yet where to put their litter box.

The first photo shows the curtains in the living room; there are smaller versions of the same thing in both bedrooms. The hardware necessary to keep these things up is quite firmly attached to the wall. It took Mom the better part of the afternoon to get it all out, while I dealt with the other problem, the wallpaper border that was up. It came down easily enough, but the room was painted cream after it went up, so there were ridges of paint I had to sand down (Mom figured out something easier after I had done two walls). I’m very glad that’s the only room with a border. The curtain hardware is more than enough to handle.

The second photo shows the rose pink paint that was under the border. I also enjoy how the curtains weren’t taken down when the cream paint was done, so there’s been extra pink paint hiding behind the valence for who knows how long.

Bolder Colors Than Expected

Tonight I am sitting at my dining room table. Yay! Also, it was heavier than I expected, but Mom and I persevered in getting it up my stairs.

It’s interesting all the things you don’t notice even if you’ve seen your prospective home numerous times before closing. For instance, while the carpet is pretty soft, it’s way more discolored than I thought. I’m starting to think, though, that it’s not beige carpet with weird peach staining, but peach carpet that has faded in a lot of places to beige. This is just one of a whole bunch of things that I thought I’d wait quite a while before updating or replacing that are moving up on the timeline.

The big event today was buying quart-size containers of the paint colors I had chosen so I could put some on the walls before buying full gallons. I’ve been mulling over colors for ages, and I still don’t know what I’m doing in the dining room, entryway, staircase wall/landing, or bathroom, and Mom wants to try something in my second bedroom so she’s in charge of that.

[Note: The colors aren’t completely true because (1) these are taken with my iPhone, and (2) the lighting isn’t very good in most of the rooms.]

The color I chose for the master bedroom is a pretty typical color for me. Something calm and pretty, and it coordinates with a bedspread I bought a few years ago but have never used.

Choosing a color for the living room was challenging because I ended up buying sort of caramel-colored leather sofas. I certainly couldn’t go with my original thought of a light silvery grey. I started thinking about blue, and found a couple on one paint chip that I really liked. First, the one that I’m not going with:

It was just too dark, and I suspected that might be the case, but I wanted to try it. I love the color, though, and will use it for something eventually. The color I am going with:

The kitchen is where I’m really reaching outside of my comfort zone. I bought the following canister and a coordinating oil dispenser a few years ago, and used them as the inspiration.

It appears it’s going to need a couple of coats, but it’s pretty much what I’ve been thinking for a while.

In other news, I actually did a little knitting this evening. I was at my parents’ for dinner and to watch The Amazing Race, and decided to cast on the bath mat I got yarn and the pattern for a few days ago.  My NaKnitMo total is currently at 4,810/30,000 stitches, so a little behind a 1,000/day average, but by a week or so from now, I should be more on my regular schedule of knitting with TV for part of most evenings and be able to get back where I want to be.
